Parent’s Guide: Supporting Your Child’s Coding Journey at Home

The Role of Parents in the Coding Journey
Coding is more than just a technical skill — it's a long-term journey filled with learning, exploration, creativity, and resilience. As your child learns to code, your support at home can make a world of difference. Whether you're a tech-savvy parent or someone completely new to programming, there are meaningful ways you can help.
At Roboto Coding Academy, we understand that today’s parents juggle many responsibilities. That’s why we’re not just a coding school in Singapore that offers physical, in-person classes for children aged 6 to 16 — we also provide a strong Parent Support System, including a dedicated Customer Service hotline and experienced Parent Support Team, to walk with you through every stage of your child's coding journey.
Step 1: Cultivate a Growth Mindset at Home
Learning to code involves making mistakes and learning from them. One of the most helpful things parents can do is to encourage a growth mindset — the belief that ability improves with effort.
You can support this by:
Praising your child for their persistence and curiosity, not just outcomes
Encouraging problem-solving and experimentation
Helping them understand that debugging and failure are part of learning
This mindset shift creates a positive home environment where your child feels safe to explore and grow.
Step 2: Show Interest and Stay Involved
Even if you don’t code yourself, showing interest in your child’s projects goes a long way.
Ask questions like:
“What are you building this week in Scratch?”
“What challenge did you face and how did you solve it?”
“Can you show me what your game does?”
These conversations reinforce the value of their learning and build your connection with them.
Roboto Coding Academy provides regular updates to parents, including progress reports and learning goals. Our team is always available to answer questions and provide guidance through our Parent Support Team and Hotline.
Step 3: Create the Right Environment at Home
Help your child succeed by giving them:
A quiet space for focused learning
A reliable device for coding at home (laptop or tablet)
Unstructured time to explore coding beyond class
Some kids enjoy building extra features into their class projects or trying out new tools like Roblox Studio or GameMaker. Giving them this space helps reinforce what they learn in class.
Step 4: Use Resources That Complement In-Class Learning
Ask your child’s instructor about additional platforms or challenges they can explore at home.
Roboto Coding Academy offers structured weekly lessons in:
Scratch, Python, HTML/CSS, Javascript
Minecraft Modding and Roblox Game Design
AI and Robotics using mBot and Lego
We also provide optional home challenges to support your child’s learning between sessions. If you’re ever unsure how to support these, our Customer Service Team is here to assist.
Step 5: Don’t Worry About Understanding the Code
Parents often ask: "How can I help if I don’t understand what they’re learning?" The good news is, you don’t have to. You don’t need to be a coder to encourage, motivate, and celebrate your child’s efforts.
At Roboto, our trained instructors and personalised curriculum are designed to guide each student based on their level and interest. What matters most from you is your encouragement and support.
